The Academy Of Art University Adds A New Wrinkle To Its Presence At New York Fashion Week

The Academy of Art University in San Francisco is said to be the largest private college of its kind in the nation. They teach aspiring artists and designers the skills they need to succeed professionally. Richard S. Stephens established this university in 1929. At the time he was the creative director at Sunset Magazine and he felt that people armed with the right instruction could succeed in his industry. He also believed that people shouldn’t need an art portfolio to get this education and that the classes should be taught by professional artists.

For the past 13 years, the Academy of Art University has had students debut fashion during New York Fashion Week. They will be debuting the FW/19 and SS/19 collections this year at Pier 59 Studios. This will be a runway show where the designers clothing is modeled for a large audience in attendance. The Master of Fine Arts degree program will be featuring the work of seventeen designers. There will be eleven womenswear collections shown to the audience and two menswear collections.

Today, the Academy of Art University is led by Richard Stephens granddaughter, Dr. Elisa Stephens. Under her leadership, this university has grown from a student body of around 2,000 students in 1992 to one that now has around 12,000 students. About 8,000 of these students are undergraduates while the remaining 4,000 are doing postgraduate programs. They are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

In a new wrinkle, this will be the first year that the Academy of Art University will be holding a two-day showroom as part of New York Fashion Week. Industry professionals will be able to stop by the showroom in order to get an up-close look at what the students came up with. The clothing collections will be shown at Kimball Studio on both September 10th and the 11th.

The four main areas they teach at this university are design, entertainment, fine art, and liberal arts. Students have gone on to work in advertising, video games, movies, television, illustration, photography, visual development, and more.
